The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association has implemented an exciting new initiative for the 2018-19 school year by creating a Student Athlete Advisory Council.
The SAAC will give an unprecedented voice to the state’s student-athletes, who last year numbered 283,000 at the NJSIAA’s 434-member schools. It will fall under the responsibilities of Colleen Maguire, NJSIAA’s Director of Finance and Administration.
The council will be comprised of one student-athlete representative from each member school. The council will be led by a group of 31 student ambassadors, who gathered at NJSIAA headquarters on August 30 for their first meeting.
The student ambassadors were chosen from more than 100 student-athletes who submitted applications during the spring. The 31 student ambassadors are comprised of rising sophomores and juniors and will serve two-year commitments.
The ambassadors come from all parts of the state. At their first meeting, they listened to several speakers and engaged in various activities designed to foster communication with each other. They then had a chance to voicetheissues pertaining to student-athletes that affect both themselves and their teammates back home.
The SAAC, with the representatives from all schools, will meet later this fall and again during the spring at the Woodbridge Community Center. The student ambassadors will lead those meetings, and also attend additional ambassador meetings during the winter and spring in Robbinsville.
The ambassadors are divided into North, Central and South sections, and each of those groups has an adult advisor. They will also communicate with SAAC members from within their section. The adult advisors are retired Secaucus athletic director Stan Fryczynski for the North, retired East Brunswick athletic director Frank Noppenberger for the Central and retired Shawnee athletic director Susan Murphy for the South students.
