National Girls and Women In Sports Day Photos
Student-Athletes from nearly 200 NJSIAA-member schools were honored on Sunday, February 3rd, at the annual National Girls and Women In Sports Day celebration that took place at Seton Hall University in South Orange.
Each school was eligible to send an athlete to the luncheon, which was held in conjunction with the the 33rd anniversary of the day which highlights the achievements of female athletes, along with the advancements that have been made since the passage of Title IX in 1972.
In addition to the recognition of the high school athletes, each two and four-year college in the state also had an athlete recognized.
Two figures from NJSIAA schools were also feted with Honor Awards.
Elaine McGrath, the athletic director at South Brunswick, was one of the recipients. She has been instrumental in advancing girls sports in the Greater Middlesex Conference, has served as president of both the GMC and NJSIAA, and has served on numerous NJSIAA committees, as well as offering South Brunswick as a host for many NJSIAA events.
Jennifer Spieker was also honored. A former field hockey, basketball and lacrosse coach at Hunterdon Central, she was instrumental in fighting to put female high school sports on the same level as male sports. She continues to serve as a field hockey and lacrosse official.
